Seeing Red

Decorating with red can be tricky. The key to creating a pleasing scheme is balance.

In the first space pictured, red is used as an accent color. The rest of the color palette is a range of neutrals from creme, to naturals (such as wicker and straw), and finally black. A few details are worth pointing out: The window gives away the secret that this is a basement yet the full length drapery deceives the eye and gives an otherwise bare wall visual interest. Also take note of the black and white photos with red matting.

Again in this bedroom red is the accent with the addition of soft blue to an otherwise neutral palette. I especially like how the walls are white and the alcove ceiling is beige.

And last is a bolder space. A good foil to red is a cool periwinkle blue-purple.

Are you willing to give red a try? Which of these rooms is your favorite?
