Ceilings To Look Up To
June 8th, 2010 PrintThe ceiling comprises one-sixth of a room, yet it often gets no more than a coat of white paint. Changing the look of the ceiling is a great way to add some drama and excitement to your room.
Yes, the old rule states that the lighter the color, the higher the ceiling will appear, but “lower” need not mean claustrophobic. Adding color to the ceiling can give a room coziness or drama.
Consider your light sources (both natural and artificial) when choosing ceiling (and wall) colors. Sunlit rooms will feel airy with sunlight bouncing off a blush or skyblue ceiling, and candlelight reflecting on terracotta or red tones will produce a rich glow.
Ceiling paint generally has a flat finish, but an eggshell or satin will give a colored ceiling an extra sheen (be aware that glossy finishes will highlight any imperfections).
Soft muted colors (especially shades of blue) will give a calm & relaxing mood to a room. Choose a a lighter version of your wall or accent color.
Applying a contrasting color to a ceiling will dramatically transform the space.
Painting the ceiling the same shade as the walls will envelope a room in color. It creates a seamless cocoon, perfect for a bedroom or bath.
When is a white ceiling necessary? When the walls of a room are painted a bold shade, stick with a white ceiling. Soften the look by skipping the standard white and choosing a slightly warmer shade of white. Repeat the white throughout the room by using it for the mouldings, accessories or bedding to give the room balance.
