Bread Machine Challah

June 2nd, 2010 Print

Thanks to Rochel Leiser from New Hempstead, New York for sharing this recipe!

Ingredients:

1 3/4 cups water (room temperature to warm)
1/4 cup oil
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoon salt
5 cups flour
1 tablespoon dry  yeast

Directions:

  1. Place water, oil, sugar, and salt in bread machine bowl. Add flour on top. Do not mix.
  2. Make a small indentation in the flour and pour in the yeast making sure it does not touch water and salt etc.
  3. Set bread machine to the dough setting. When dough is ready, remove from bread machine and divide in half.  This recipe yields too much dough to be able to bake it in the bread machine.
  4. Shape or braid each challah as you normally would. Let rise 20 min in pan. Paint with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  5. Bake at 375 for   approximately 20-30 minutes until golden. Cool on a wire rack.

    Hi Rochel
Thanks so much for recipe – I actually love my challah recipe of many years, however it’s a huge dough and I was looking for a smaller option for a while for the cooasions I am unable to a big batch (only downside is not being able to take challah)
I loved your recipe, made it for the past shabbos and guests loved it too so thanks so much
As a variation on your recipe I switched the water to apple juice (to make mezonot) and used just 1tsp of salt to reduce the salt slightly and I made rugelech/kokash cake – result was really good!

One should check with their Rav whether substituting apple juice for water “changes” bracha to mezpnot. Most Rabbanim paskin that if the bread/challa etc. is “the bread of your meal” then whether made with juice or water one must nevertheless wash to it and bentch after it.
