Chol Hamoed Trip: Priceless

March 21st, 2010 Print

What has more value, a grand afikomen prize or a mega Chol Hamoed trip? Some are inclined to opt for a pricey gift in place of a big trip, thinking that a toy will provide endless hours of fun, while a trip only occupies the children for a few hours.

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests just the opposite. When we spend money on material items the initial allure and our interest usually decreases over time. But when we spend on experiences the memories tend to increase as time passes. Over time your kids will forget throwing up and fighting in the backseat of the car, but they will hold on to the precious moments spent at the zoo, museum, or park to which we made the effort to bring them.

Meanwhile, at the toy store on Chol Hamoed Pesach parents are sweating as children tantrum on the floor pleading for toys and doodads which will total a small fortune. If you’re lucky to leave the store with smiling happy faces, it’s inevitable the begged for toys will fall out of favor or simply be too childish at some point. Yes, money can’t buy happiness but if you want to build lasting family memories, pack the proverbial matzoh picnic and head out. And to satisfy all opinions, buy some modest afikomen gifts before Pesach to reward your brood on the spot.
