A Gourmet Fig Spirit for Your Tu B’Shvat Table
January 28th, 2010 Print
If you are looking for something different to serve this Shabbos Tu B’Shvat you may want to try a bottle of Zachlawi Fig Arak.
Arak is a strong aniseed (black licorice tasting) flavored alcoholic drink favored by Middle Easterners. The fig variety is made from concentrated fig juice that is distilled numerous times with a combination of fennel, anise seeds, and star anise.
Although it has a light fruity flavor, this is a strong 80 proof drink and should not be mistaken for a liqueur.
Zachlawi is a relatively new company out of New Jersey, owned by a Syrian Jew, which also produces traditional arak and vodka.
Zachlawi is certified kosher by the OU and some of the bottles are kosher for Pesach as well.
L’chaim!
