Read Any Good Books Lately?

January 27th, 2010 Print

If you have a child who is new to the world of reading you can relate to this scenario. When our kids learn to read we first breathe a sigh of relief that they are maturing and interested in a “smart” activity which can occupy them for hours on end. Soon it dawns on us that we, the parents, are responsible for supplying “quality” reading material which is age appropriate, interesting, and most of all content-kosher.

Kudos to the Jewish publishers who have come a long way. The quality of their books is improving rapidly but for eager readers the selection may not be enough. If your child needs a steady flow of new reading material, you probably frequent your local library.

Chinuch.org provides an approved secular reading list (PDF)  to help in your quest. Obviously we all have different standards, but this guide should be a great starting place.
